Chapter 7 - Pep Talk in the Bathroom
I don’t know why I had been so quick to judge Harry. I mean, I had looked at the media and immediately labeled him as an ego-maniac who doesn’t care about anyone else but himself. That was a mistake. When we had gone to that dinner, he kept apologizing for the paparazzi’s rude behavior. Even though it wasn’t his fault and he couldn’t control it, he kept apologizing – which was sweet of him.
Harry was at the studio again today, so I was by myself. And since I was sitting by myself at the apartment, and had nothing better to do, I got dressed and headed it. I put on my jeans and an oversized sweater – I had a fetish for those – and wore sunglasses before walking out. I knew there was a Starbucks just around the corner, so I walked over there.
I had grown to like London – a lot. I had always been used to the warm weather, so the cold atmosphere was comforting and I loved it. Plus, whenever I heard someone’s accent, I was over the moon and it made me want to be British. People were all so nice around here, always smiling and pleasant. That’s something my home town didn’t have, unless you were on the good side of some people.
As I entered the café, the fresh smell of coffee greeted my nose and I smiled. I stood in line and when it was my turn, I got myself a mocha with extra foam, before walking out of Starbucks. As I sipped my drink through the green straw, I looked to my left as people walked and cars drove by. And because of that, I accidently bumped into someone.
“Oh, gosh, I’m so sorry!” I immediately apologize, knowing it was my fault.
“No worries.” I look to see a girl around my age or a year younger smiling back at me. She then squints her hazel eyes, and then they widen. “No way, you’re Kelsey, right? Harry Styles’ wife?”
My eyes widen behind my sunglasses, shocked at the fact that this girl actually recognized me. “I.. Uh, um,” I stammered.
She grins widely. “It is you!” she exclaims in her British accent. “I’m such a big One Direction fan, you have no idea. Can I please get a picture with you?”
My lips part as I stare at her in wonder. “W-Why would you want a picture with me?” I ask, utterly confused.
“Because you’re Harry’s wife,” she grins as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. For me, I still wasn’t used to that title. “Please? Just one picture?”
I bite my bottom lip, but nod. “Sure,” I give her a small smile.
She squeals in delight before standing in front of me and pulling out her iPhone. I smile next to her as she takes a quick selfie of us, and says, “Thank you so much!”
“No problem,” I smile, still confused as to what was going on.
“Well, I best be going,” she smiles and before we walks away, she turns to me and says in a genuine voice, “I’m really sorry for your loss.”
I couldn’t help but smile slightly as she walked away. She was a fan of the boys’, and she knew who I was. Not to mention, she wasn’t rude to me like I thought the fans would be. In fact, she was sweet and looked sincerely sorry for the death of my mother.
Yeah, I was beginning to like England.

I was just randomly scrolling through my mentions when I saw that girl’s tweet, and curiosity grew in me as I clicked on it. That’s when I saw a picture of Kelsey smiling next to some girl – probably the fan. For some reason, it made me smile. I guess the lads must have noticed me smile weirdly at my phone because Zayn spoke out about it.
“Haz, if you’re done smiling at your phone like a creep, we need to record your part,” his deep voice said.
I instantly looked up, locking my phone as I shove it back in my pocket. Louis took notice of my jumpy action, because he raised his eyebrow questioningly but gave me a look. I ignored it, however. Instead, I walked straight into the recording booth and put the headphones on. Nate, the guy in charge, gave me a thumbs up as the tune of our newest song, Best Song Ever, started playing as I started singing into the microphone.
When I was finally done, I walked out of the booth and plopped down on the brown leather couch next to Niall. Just as I do, he turns to look at me. “You never told us how your dinner with Kelsey went,” he says.
Suddenly all eyes were on me, except for Nate who was pressing some buttons and talking on the phone. “It went well,” I say with a shrug of my shoulders.
“Did you find out anything about her?” Liam asks.
“She likes to draw,” I reply without hesitation. “She said she used to go to the woods back at her old town and sit and draw the animals. She thinks it was peaceful and relaxing there, so she always used to visit that place.”
When I’m done talking, all the boys are looking at me with raised eyebrows, both shocked and impressed. “Sounds like you really got to know her,” Louis smirks and I roll my eyes.
“It was just one dinner,” I reply, thinking of it as no big deal.
Zayn raises an eyebrow. “So, what?” he asks. “You just go out on one dinner and you think you’re fine for the rest of your life?”
“Of course not,” I reply, my tone a bit defensive though I’m not exactly sure why. “It’s going to take more than just one dinner to get through to Kelsey. She’s guarded and has walls built up – it’s hard to just get her to smile.”
“Do you blame her?” Niall asks. “She’s married to you,” he joked.
I glared at him as the others chuckled. “What Niall means is,” Liam quickly jumped in, “Kelsey lost her mum and she’s married to someone she barely knows. It’s kind of a new thing to deal with.”
“Plus, you’re not just ‘some guy’,” Louis adds. “You’re Harry Styles, a member of One Direction. You’re extremely famous and she’s going to have to get used to the fact that fans and paparazzi are going to follow her.”
I suddenly let out a loud groan, realization dawning on me. “Shit, the hate,” I say and the boys stare at me. “She’s going to get a lot of hate! I mean, Dani, El, and Perrie get that because they’re your girlfriends. Imagine the hate Kelsey is going to get because she’s my wife! Especially since I was never even dating her in the first place – they’re going to blow!”
“You’re gonna have to help her through with it, mate,” Zayn says. “She’s your responsibility now.”
I let out a sigh as Louis sits next to me. “Oh come on, now. Kelsey doesn’t even seem that bad.”
“She’s not,” I assure him, and the rest of the boys raise eyebrows as if asking, what’s the problem? “She’s just really hard to reach out to. At first I thought she didn’t like me, but now she’s just quiet and doesn’t say a word.”
“It’ll take time for her to open up to you, Harry,” Niall pats my back. “Give her some time.”
Suddenly, Louis’ face lights up. “How about we all go to dinner tonight?” he asks. “Nothing fancy, just going to Nando’s. El and Dani will come as well.”
“Ooh, and Perrie,” Zayn grins widely. “She’s back in town.”
Louis grins and nods. “It’s settled, then! We’ll meet at Nando’s at eight. Go tell your girlfriends – or in Harry’s case, wife.”
That conversation ended with me pushing him off the couch.
The thought of dinner tonight with all of the boys made me kind of nervous. But the fact that Eleanor and Danielle were going to be there calmed me down a bit. Plus, I heard Zayn’s girlfriend Perrie was going to be there as well so it would be my first time meeting her. I heard we were going to some restaurant called Nando’s, and since I had never been there, I didn’t know what to wear.
Well, that is until Harry told me to just dress casually. So I wore skinny jeans, boots, and a pink blouse. Since my hair was too short to be done anything with, I just left it in its usual and manageable waves. Harry then entered the room, dressed in jeans, brown shoes, and button down shirt with the first few buttons undone so I could see a bit of his chest tattoos.
“Let’s go?” he asks and I nod.
We get into his Range Rover and he immediately starts driving. In less than ten minutes, we reached the restaurant and we walked inside, and instantly spotting the group of people that were already seated and talking and laughing loudly.
Harry led me over to them as Louis looked at us. “Hey, look who decided to join us,” he announced.
Everyone looked over as Harry grinned, and Eleanor and Danielle smiled at me as I returned the gesture. Next to Zayn I saw a platinum blond haired girl with big blue eyes, grinning. She was gorgeous; I’ll give you that, and made me feel so plain because of her beauty. But her smile was welcoming when she saw me, and it widened as I sat down in between Harry and Danielle.
“Kelsey, this is Perrie, Zayn’s girlfriend,” Harry introduced us. “Perrie, this is Kelsey.”
Perrie smiled at me. “It’s nice to meet you,” she says.
I smile back. “You too.”
Throughout the entire dinner, I knew Kelsey felt odd and out of place. No matter how much the Danielle, Perrie, and I tried to make her feel included, she wouldn’t say much. Just smile and nod. And I felt bad for that. We all knew how hard this was for her, to be thrown into a world with people you don’t know. She’s being thrusted into Harry’s fame-filled world, and Kelsey has no idea how to cope with it. I feel terrible about that, because all I want to do is help her.
As we ate our dinner and the lads laughed and chattered away, I looked across the table at Kelsey. She was sucking in her bottom lip, looking down at her untouched food. She hadn’t even picked up her fork to try and take a bite out of it; instead her blue eyes just stared at her chicken parmesan.
Suddenly, Kelsey puts her napkin down on the table and stands up, all eyes on her. “Excuse me,” she mumbles, before pushing her chair back and walking to the back of the restaurant, where the bathrooms were.
Harry stared after her, and I saw concern actually lacing his green eyes. He was about to stand up until I stopped him. “Let me,” I tell him, before standing up myself and going towards the ladies room.
I enter the bathroom quietly, and immediately my eyes land on the blonde girl leaning over the sink. Her palms were pressed against the side of the sink and to my surprise I heard a sob escape her. Immediately, I walked inside as I approached her.
“Kelsey,” I say quietly, standing next to her. “Are you okay?”
“I don’t know what I’m doing,” her voice was weak as she spoke, lifting her head and I saw that her eyes were almost blood shot. Tears were running down her cheeks, her mascara a bit smeared as the tip of her nose was a bit red. “I don’t belong here, it’s clear that I don’t. But here I am, having dinner with people I don’t even know and I feel so alone.”
My heart kind of broke at that. If she felt so alone while she had dinner with all of us, I couldn’t imagine how she felt with just Harry in the flat or when he’s out of the house. “Kelsey… You’re not alone.”
“But I am, Eleanor,” Kelsey insisted, shaking her head. “I feel so weird when I’m around you or Danielle or the boys. Even around Harry! I just don’t fit in. I was the girl who was forced into your lives – mostly Harry’s. He was forced into marrying me, and we had no say in this. I feel like such a burden and I-I can’t do a-anything about it. It just sucks.”
By the end of her rant, fresh tears ran down her cheeks as Kelsey shook her head, turning away as she sniffled. “Oh, Kelsey,” I sigh, pulling her in for a hug. “No one thinks of you as a burden – not even Harry.”
“You don’t know that,” Kelsey shakes her head, sniffling as she pulls away.
“You’re right, I don’t,” I tell her truthfully, my hands on her shoulders. “But I do know Harry, and I know that he’s not one to think of anyone as a burden. He’s one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet. If someone insults him in the worst possible way, he’s going to think of something nice to say about them – no matter how rude the person was to him. The only time he’ll ever get angry is when something hits him personally. But trust me, you haven’t angered or burdened him.”
Kelsey lets out a breath as she wipes the stray tears away. “I’m so out of place,” she says, defeat lacing her voice as her shoulders slump.
“You are not out of place,” I assure her, my grip on her shoulders tightening as I look her directly in her blue eyes. “Have you seen us? We’re a group of teenagers and twenty years olds who literally just laugh at everything they see and like to eat and maybe have a drink once in a while.” Kelsey chuckles slightly at my description. “But don’t worry; you’re going to be perfectly fine with us.”
After Eleanor’s pep talk, she helped me get cleaned up and convinced me to go back. But I told her I’d join her shortly because I needed to fix my makeup. So she left the bathroom and I was here by myself. As I looked at myself in the mirror, I sighed in disappointment as I saw my slightly red eyes. As I reapplied my lip gloss, the door swung open and my eyes widened when I saw who it was.
“This is a girl’s bathroom – I hope you know that,” I tell him in a quiet tone.
“I know,” Harry replies, the door swinging shut behind him. “I just wanted to make sure that you were okay.”
I give him a small smile and nod. “Yeah, I’m fine.”
Harry’s eyebrows furrow, and I could tell that he was worried. “Are you sure?” he asks. “Do you want to go home?”
I shake my head. “I told you, I’m fine,” I insist. “Seriously, Harry –”
He cut me off, taking another step closer to me and suddenly he cups my face. His hands are large and warm and soft, and it feels as if electricity jolts through my body because of his touch. Harry’s green eyes peer down at me, golden specks I noticed in his eyes as he looked concerned.
“Have you been crying?” he asks, his voice low and husky.
I feel shocked at his actions and our sudden proximity, nerves swirling around in my stomach as I try to think straight. I found myself getting lost in his eyes, and I blinked as I looked down. “I – I… Yeah, but I’m f-fine now.”
Harry’s hands went from my face down to the side of my neck, as his left index finger tucked under my chin and he made me look up at him and make eye contact. “You’re not a burden.”
His sudden statement caused my eyes to widen as my lips parted. How did he…
“I heard you and Eleanor talking,” he says with a slight smile as my cheeks flushed. Shit, he heard all that? He must think I’m really dramatic or something. Crap. “But seriously, though,” Harry continues and he drops his hands to his side as he gives me a friendly smile, one that pops both his dimples and it causes a slight smile to tug at my lips as well. “I do think we got rushed into all of this a little too quickly, but I feel like if we tried and got to know each other a bit more, we’d be able to get along and this whole thing wouldn’t be so bad.”
I bite my bottom lip, taking in his words as he continues. “I know you’re not exactly too happy about this, being stuck with someone like me and all and –”
“Someone like you?” I cut him off and he nods slowly. “Look, Harry, this doesn’t really have to do much with you. I guess I’m just overwhelmed. I would be if I was forced to marry any other guy. It’s just a lot to deal with, you know? But I promise you, it’s not your fault or anything.”
Harry sucks in his bottom lip, his upper teeth digging into the skin just below his bottom lip as I give him a reassuring smile. “I’m just gonna have to get used to all of this – to you, your lifestyle, and your friends. It might take a while, but I’ll eventually get used to it.”
Suddenly Harry’s hands enveloped my small ones as he squeezed them slightly, looking into my blue eyes as a genuine smile appeared on his lips. “Take all the time you need.”
